On October 27, Ambassador Liu Weimin attended and  addressed the Government of Tonga and Development Partners’ Forum 2026. Hon. Vika Sivoki Lavemaau, Minister for Finance of Tonga, delivered opening remarks. Mr. Paula Maʻu, Chief Secretary of Prime Minister’s Office, presented Tonga Strategic Development Framework 2035. Relevant departments provided an update on the country’s economic situation and the implementation of the government budget for the current fiscal year. Senior officials from various Ministries, as well as representatives of diplomatic missions, financial institutions and international organizations were present at the forum.

H.E. Ambassador Liu Weimin said that over the past 28 years since the establishment of diplomatic relations between China and Tonga, the two countries have achieved fruitful  cooperation across a wide range of areas based on sovereignty and equality, respecting the autonomy of island countries, development oriented, openness and inclusiveness, which fully demonstrates the strong partnership between the two nations. Going forward, China will further align its cooperation with Tonga’s development strategies, focus cooperation on energy transformation and climate resilience, and deliver more “small and smart” projects that directly benefit people’s livelihoods. China stands ready to enhance cooperation for mutual benefit with Tonga’s development partners and contribute to support Tonga in achieving inclusive and sustainable development. All parties should rise above geopolitical competition mentality, and refrain from exclusive arrangements.
