From 14 to 17 October, Xiao Yafei, Vice Chairman of the Standing Committee of the Guangdong Provincial People’s Congress, led the Guangdong-Dongguan Joint Delegation on a visit to Tonga.

The delegation was cordially received by His Majesty King Tupou VI and Her Royal Highness Princess Pilolevu. Witnessed by Hon. Prime Minister Lord Fakafanua, Dongguan signed handover agreements on assistance, including household solar facilities, with multiple Tongan departments such as the Prime Minister's Office, the Ministry of Tourism, and the Ministry of Education and Training. The provincial delegation held in-depth exchanges with the Legislative Assembly of Tonga on topics including legislation on coastline protection and regulatory governance. The delegation also visited Queen Salote College to donate funds and distribute schoolbags as tokens of care.

This was the delegation's first visit to Ha'apai since Dongguan and Ha'apai established sister-city relations, and it was warmly welcomed by people from all sectors locally. During the visit, the delegation and the Office of the Governor of Ha'apai jointly announced the official establishment of the Dongguan-Ha'apai Sister City Scholarship.

This visit is an important measure to implement the consensus reached at the meeting between the heads of two state last November. It further deepened exchanges between the legislative bodies of China and Tonga, subnational cooperation, and people-to-people bonds, brought the Dongguan-Ha'apai sister-city relationship to a new level, and laid a solid foundation for future cooperation.
