On July 23, 2026, the Chinese Embassy in Tonga held the reception celebrating the 99th anniversary of the founding of the Chinese People’s Liberation Army (PLA). H.E. Ambassador Liu Weimin, HRH Crown Prince Tupouto’a ’Ulukalala, Lord Fakafanua, Prime Minister of Tonga and other senior government officials, military representatives and guests from various sectors attended the event.

In his remarks, Ambassador Liu noted that the PLA, founded and led by the Communist Party of China, has always upheld its fundamental purpose of serving the people wholeheartedly. He said that the great spirit of the Long March has become an enduring part of the PLA’s spiritual heritage, inspiring generations of Chinese service members to faithfully fulfill their missions, resolutely safeguard China’s sovereignty, security and development interests, and contribute to world peace and security. He added that China stands ready to deepen cooperation with Tonga across various fields and work together to build a peaceful and prosperous future.

Prime Minister Lord Fakafanua congratulated the PLA on the 99th anniversary of its founding, reaffirming Tonga’s firm commitment to the one-China principle. He said that Tonga stands ready to work with China to advance the shared aspiration for regional stability, sustainable development and enduring cooperation.

A photo exhibition featuring China’s military peacekeeping efforts and a short film commemorating the Long March were presented during the reception.
