Statement by TCFA on the one-China Principle and

China–Tonga Relations

The Tonga–China Friendship Association reaffirms the one-China principle as the essential political foundation of friendly and cooperative relations between China and Tonga.

We state clearly:

There is only one China in the world.

Taiwan is an inalienable part of China.

The Government of the People’s Republic of China is the sole legal government representing the whole of China.

We support the efforts of the Chinese Government toward national reunification.

We uphold the authority of the United Nations General Assembly Resolution 2758.

Recently, the Taiwan authorities have tried every means to undermine the Pacific Islands Forum Leaders meeting, constantly attempting to expand their so-called "international space", and push for "Taiwan Independence" to split China's territory. The Tonga China Friendship Association (TCFA) is firmly opposed to this action. TCFA reaffirms the one-China principle as the essential political foundation of friendly and cooperative relations between Tonga and China.

This position reflects longstanding Tonga–China commitments, including the 1998 Communiqué establishing diplomatic relations, the Joint Press Communiqué during His Majesty King Tupou VI’s state visit to China in March 2018, and the Joint Statement issued during His Majesty’s state visit to China in November 2025. These documents confirm Tonga’s continued recognition of the one-China principle and its opposition to any challenge to the authority of U.N. Resolution 2758.

TCFA stands with these commitments and affirms that respect for the one-China principle is vital to sustaining the strong, stable, and mutually beneficial relationship between our two countries.

Issued by TCFA on Friday 15 2026.
