From April 29 to May 1, Ambassador Liu Weimin paid a visit to the Ha’apai Islands of Tonga. During the visit, he went to the Office of the Governor of Ha’apai, Ha’apai High School and the Uiha Island, where he attended handover ceremonies of the assistance from Dongguan, siseter city of Ha’apai. Hon. Prime Minister Lord Fakafanua, Hon. Governor of Ha’apai Mr. Taufatofua, Hon. MP Vuki and Latu. attended the events.

Ambassador Liu stressed that the sister-city friendship between Dongguan and Ha’apai has grown stronger over time. At the end of last year, His Majesty King Tupou VI paid a successful state visit to China, elevating bilateral relations to a new height. China stands ready to work with Tonga to implement the important consensus reached between the two heads of state, deepen sub-national cooperation, and advance the sister-city relationship between Dongguan and Ha’apai to achieve greater depth and substance.

Prime Minister spoke highly of the sister-city bond between Ha’apai and Dongguan, emphasizing that Tonga’s commitment to the one-China principle is non-negotiable. The Governor of Ha’apai stated that China’s selfless assistance over the years has delivered tangible benefits to Ha’apai’s economic and social development and the well-being of local people, and expressed readiness to further facilitate the sister-city relationship between Ha’apai and Dongguan.
