Ambassador Liu Weimin Called on New Prime Minister Hon. Lord Fakafanua

On January 22, Ambassador Liu Weimin called on Tonga’s new Prime Minister, Lord Fakafanua. The two sides held in-depth exchanges on deepening cooperation between the two countries.

Ambassador Liu stated that China highly values the traditional friendship and comprehensive strategic partnership with Tonga. China stands ready to work with the new government to actively implement the outcomes of His Majesty King Tupou VI's visit to China, aligning with the priorities of the new government—including the 100-Day Plan in the near term and Tonga Strategic Development Framework(2025-2035) in the long run—to jointly promote Tonga’s economic development and improvement of people’s livelihoods.

Lord Fakafanua noted that China assists Tonga across a range of development priorities including grass roots projects and renewable energy initiatives, which have helped improve the well-being of people, strengthen the energy security and enhance the capacity to address climate change. He hoped that China would continue supporting Tonga in achieving its self-reliant and sustainable development.He also affirmed that the Tongan new government firmly adheres to the one-China principle and supports China in safeguarding its core interests.
