On January 12,2026, Ambassador Liu Weimin called on Hon Dr Mo’ale ‘Otunuku, Minister for Education and Training of Tonga. and congratulated him on his new appointment. The two sides held in-depth discussions on educational cooperation.

Ambassador Liu noted that since the establishment of diplomatic relations, China and Tonga have maintained a sound and steady development of bilateral ties, with educational cooperation continuously deepening.The Chinese government has long provided scholarships to Tongan students, invited Tongan primary and secondary school teachers to China for short-term training, and several Chinese universities have carried out exchanges and cooperation with Tonga. In November last year, during the state visit of His Majesty King Tupou VI to China, MOU on cooperation in education was signed. China stands ready to work with Tonga to actively implement the important outcomes of His Majesty’s visit, and further deepen bilateral education cooperation. Ambassador Liu also elaborated on the historical context of the Taiwan question and the one-China principle.
Hon Dr Mo’ale ‘Otunuku expressed his gratitude for China’s support, affirmed the One-China Principle. He expressed his willingness to continue strengthening communication and coordination on the basis of mutual respect, pragmatic and efficiency, and to further promote the development of educational cooperation.
The two sides agreed to further explore the establishment of a Confucius Institute in Tonga.
