Chinese Embassy in Tonga held reception to celebrate PLA’s 98th anniversary

The Embassy of the People’s Republic of China in Tonga hosted a reception to celebrate the 98th anniversary of the founding of the Chinese People’s Liberation Army(PLA) on Wednesday, July 30th, 2025. The event was attended by guests including Ambassador Liu Weimin, H.R.H. Crown Prince of Tonga, Tupouto’a ’Ulukalala, Minister for His Majesty’s Armed Forces and Minister for Foreign Affairs, Acting Prime Minister Dr. Taniela Fusimalohi, senior military and government officials, members of the diplomatic corps in Tonga, as well as representatives from overseas Chinese enterprises and institutions and the Chinese community in Tonga.

In his remarks, Ambassador Liu Weimin reflected on the glorious journey and modernization of the PLA over the past 98 years. He noted that 2025 marks the 80th anniversary of both the victory of the Chinese People’s War of Resistance Against Japanese Aggression and the World Anti-Fascist War, as well as the 80th anniversary of Taiwan’s recovery from Japanese occupation. He emphasized the importance of drawing lessons from history, cherishing the hard-won outcomes of World War II, preventing the recurrence of war, and upholding the one-China principle.

Ambassador Liu affirmed that China will continue to work together with Tonga to make greater contributions to upholding the international system with the United Nations at its core, preserving the post-war international order, safeguarding global peace and stability, and advancing the building of a community with a shared future for humanity.

Acting Prime Minister Fusimalohi extended congratulations on the 98th Anniversary of the Founding of the PLA of China, reaffirmed Tonga’s commitment to the one-China principle and expressed the hope to further deepen exchanges and cooperation between the two countries.

At the reception, a photo exhibition titled “Safeguarding World Peace for a Shard Destiny: A Force for World Peace” was displayed, along with screenings of short videos honoring Chinese military’s service including “The Guardians”.
